NOAA predicts a near normal Hurricane Season with 5-9 hurricanes. After last year’s hurricane destruction and the season ramping up I want to help you prepare for Hurricane Season.
Here are some tips on how to prepare for hurricanes:
- Make a plan. Know your evacuation route and have a plan for where you will go if you need to evacuate. Make sure you have a way to communicate with your family members and friends, such as a cell phone or a ham radio.
- Gather supplies. You will need food, water, and other supplies to last for at least 3 days if you are unable to leave your home. This includes non-perishable food, water, medicine, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, and a portable radio.
- Protect your home. Board up windows and doors, and secure loose items in your yard. If you live in a flood-prone area, elevate your furniture and appliances.
- Protect your car. Fill your gas tank and park your car in a safe place. If you live in a flood-prone area, you may want to consider parking your car on higher ground.
- Take care of your pets. Make sure you have enough food and water for your pets, and have a plan for where you will take them if you need to evacuate.
- Stay informed. Listen to the radio or TV for updates on the hurricane. Follow the instructions of local officials.
Stay safe!
