Preparing For A Hurricane

Idalia

Tropical Storm Idalia intensified this morning as it approaches Cuba. The National Hurricane Center is predicting it would grow into a Category 3 major hurricane before striking Florida this week. Central Florida should expect to see Idalia Tuesday night – Wednesday morning.

Here are 5 things to do to prepare for Tropical Storm Idalia:

  1. Make a plan and know your evacuation route. Talk to your family about what you will do if a hurricane threatens your area. Decide where you will go if you need to evacuate, and make sure everyone knows the evacuation route.
  2. Secure your home. Trim trees and shrubs that could fall on your home during a storm. Bring outdoor furniture and other loose items inside. Board up windows and doors if necessary.
  3. Stock up on supplies. Have enough food, water, and other essentials to last for at least 7 days. This includes non-perishable food, bottled water, batteries, flashlights, a first-aid kit, and a radio.
  4. Protect your car. Fill up your gas tank and park your car in a safe place. If you live in a flood-prone area, elevate your car or move it to higher ground.
  5. Have a plan for your pets. Make sure you have a safe place for your pets to stay during the storm. If you need to evacuate, take your pets with you or make arrangements for them to stay with someone else.

Stay safe,
Chris
