Orlando’s EV Highway Project

EV Highway Project

Orlando is at the forefront of an exciting transportation innovation: highways that charge electric vehicles (EVs) as they drive. This EV highway project and it’s groundbreaking technology promises to revolutionize road travel, making it smoother, greener, and more convenient for EV owners. The pilot project is supposed to take place on the Lake/Orange Expressway (SR 516).

This new toll road will feature a one-mile stretch equipped with inductive charging technology from the Norwegian company ENRX. As EVs drive over this section, embedded coils in the road will wirelessly transfer energy to their batteries, potentially at a rate of 200 kW – enough to keep them charged while cruising at highway speeds.

Orlando’s EV highway project is being closely watched worldwide, and its success could pave the way for similar initiatives in other states and countries. As the technology matures and costs decrease, we can expect to see more charging highways emerge, transforming the way we drive and paving the path towards a more sustainable future.
