Amherst Book Buddies: Young Readers Meet Teen Mentors

New England-style home reading nook with two upholstered chairs of different sizes, a small table, and a stack of books in autumn daylight.

Amherst Book Buddies gives young readers a chance to share a story with a high-school mentor. Amherst Town Library lists a Little Buddies session for Wednesday, October 14, 2026, from 4 to 4:30 p.m. Children in grades 1–4 can take part, with registration through the library.

The program centers on a relaxed read-aloud experience. A child can choose a book to read or listen while a teen buddy reads. That choice leaves room for different comfort levels, while keeping books and conversation at the heart of the visit.

Amherst Book Buddies: the October 14 details

The Little Buddies event listing places the session in the main-floor Boardman Room at Amherst Town Library, 14 Main Street. It also says registration is subject to library approval. Check the live registration page for current availability and wait-list information before making plans.

The library’s Kids & Teens page describes Book Buddies as an October-through-May program. However, check each calendar entry for its own date and time. A seasonal program description does not mean every week follows the same schedule.

Teen mentors have a separate listing

High-school students who want to help should use the Big Buddies registration page. The October 14 mentor listing runs from 4 to 6 p.m. in the same room. That longer window differs from the 30-minute Little Buddies session, so confirm the expected commitment with library staff.

Before signing up, teens can ask how matching works and what preparation the library recommends. Families can also ask which session best fits their child. For program questions, contact Amherst Town Library at 603-673-2288.

Make room for a small reading routine

Before your Amherst Book Buddies visit, invite your child to think about a favorite story or topic. Keep the conversation light. For example, ask whether they would rather read aloud, listen, or try a little of both.

Afterward, a few quiet minutes with a book at home can extend the experience. A comfortable chair and a familiar story are enough to start. There is no need to turn every reading moment into a lesson.
