Amherst Scam Alert: Town Updates Payment Email Warning

The Amherst scam alert now carries an October 8, 2026 update. It warns residents and applicants about emails that pretend to come from the town and seek payment for Planning Board matters. If a message like this reaches your inbox, pause before you respond.

What the Amherst scam alert says

The town says it will never ask residents or applicants to wire money. It also says official staff email addresses end in @amherstnh.gov. The updated notice lists two fraudulent email addresses, compared with one in the earlier version.

For an uncertain payment request, the town directs people to the Community Development Department. Call 603-673-6041, extension 204, before replying or sending money. You can read the official town notice for the current warning and contact details.

The original notice dates to May 26. The October 8 update makes it worth another look, especially if you have an application pending. However, the notice does not give a loss total or say how many people received the messages.

Check through a separate, trusted channel

The Federal Trade Commission’s phishing guide recommends contacting an organization through a phone number or website you already know is real. Avoid using contact details supplied inside a suspicious message.

First, leave any unexpected payment link unopened. Next, look up the town’s contact information independently. Then ask staff to confirm the request. A familiar logo or a convincing project reference should not replace that check.

The FTC also warns that links and attachments can install harmful software. If you do not recognize a request, take time to verify it before opening either. For broader protection, the agency recommends current security software, automatic phone updates, multi-factor authentication and backups.

Keep the warning handy

Save the town’s verified number with your project records. If someone else helps with applications or household paperwork, make sure they know about the warning too. A short check with the right department can prevent a rushed response.
