The Amherst Spooky Story Contest gives young writers a creative way to celebrate October. Amherst Town Library is accepting entries through October 26, 2026, with winners announced October 30. A quiet weekend at home could be the perfect time to dream up a mysterious setting and put a first draft on paper.
Amherst Spooky Story Contest details
According to SAU 39’s October 14 Community Connections newsletter, the contest has three age groups: 6–8, 9–12, and 13–18. Prizes are available for every age group.
- Entry deadline: October 26, 2026.
- Format: Handwritten or typed stories.
- Delivery: Bring the finished story to the library in person.
- Results: Winners will be announced October 30.
The announcement also mentions a Spooky Word Sheet for writers who would like a little inspiration. However, children can use their own vocabulary instead. Check with library staff if you have questions about entry details.
Turn a fall afternoon into writing time
First, keep the starting point simple. A strange sound in an attic, a missing pumpkin, or a light in an empty window can launch a story. Then, ask the writer to choose one main character and one problem to solve.
Next, try a short planning exercise. Write down what happens at the beginning, what gets more mysterious in the middle, and how the story ends. A clear ending can make even a very short tale feel complete.
Afterward, read the draft aloud. This helps a young author hear repeated words and notice spots that need more detail. Finally, leave time for a clean copy and a library visit before the deadline. These are optional writing ideas, rather than additional contest rules.
A coloring option for younger children
Meanwhile, the same newsletter lists a separate Crayon Coloring Contest for ages 3–5. Children can take home a contest sheet and use crayons to fill its frame. Return it to the Children’s Room with the child’s name on the back by Monday, October 19. Selected artwork will appear in the library’s Trunk or Treat display.
Plan the drop-off
Before heading out, check the Amherst Town Library website for current hours and updates. Keep a copy of the story at home so the author can enjoy it later. With the Amherst Spooky Story Contest deadline approaching, this weekend offers time to write, revise, and plan the hand-delivery.
